Family firm supports liver-transplant colleague with mammoth virtual challenge

July 15, 2025

An 874-mile virtual challenge wouldn’t be everyone’s idea of fun in mid-summer, but intrepid employees at Industrial Engines in Grimsby will be running, golfing and dog walking the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise £600 for the British Liver Trust.

The six-person team was inspired to take part by the support a colleague received from the charity as they waited for a life-saving liver transplant.

Qiana Smith, Marketing Manager at Industrial Engines said: “We’re a small, close-knit company and support a charity every year. We chose the British Liver Trust for 2025 because one of our co-workers had a life-saving liver transplant and wanted to give something back.

“For the four years that they were on the transplant list they and their family benefitted from the charity’s free Nurse-led Helpline, calling them whenever they needed support and advice. Knowing that the helpline was there when they needed it was very reassuring to them.

“The virtual Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge looks like a lot of fun and we’ll all be doing as much as we can. A couple of us run a lot, so we’ll make up a lot of the miles doing that. My brother plays golf and likes to go on walks, as does another colleague who has a dog! We’ve got 3 months to get the miles, and we’re determined to complete the challenge.”

The group will be sharing their progress on Industrial Engines’ social media with information on how to support them with donations.

Audrey Cornelius, Director of Fundraising at the British Liver Trust said: “We’re delighted that Qiana and the team at Industrial Engines are taking part in our Land’s End to John O’Groats virtual challenge and we hope they really enjoy it.

“Our free Nurse-led helpline is a vital source of advice and support to anyone who is worried about their liver health and it is only through the generosity of our fundraisers, like the Industrial Engines team, that this service can continue.

“There’s still time to sign up for our Land’s End to John O’Groats Virtual Challenge and help support people living with a liver condition. Visit Land’s End to John O’Groats Virtual Challenge to find out more.”
