About Liver UK

Liver UK is the leading liver charity, working across all four nations to save lives and improve liver health. We support everyone affected by liver disease and liver cancer, of any age, with any kind of liver condition.

From babies and children to young people, adults, families and carers, we’re here to make sure no one faces liver disease alone. We provide trusted information and emotional support, while campaigning for better prevention, earlier diagnosis, improved treatment and care.

Liver UK is the new name for the charity created when the British Liver Trust and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation came together in 2024, bringing together decades of expertise, support and campaigning to create one stronger voice for liver health.

FAQs

Do you support children and families?

Yes. Liver disease can affect people of all ages, including babies, children and young people. We provide information and support for children, parents, carers and families, helping you understand liver conditions and find the guidance you need.

Do you provide a support line?

Yes. Our free nurse-led helpline is staffed by experienced liver nurses who can offer information and support if you or someone you love has been affected by liver disease or liver cancer, or if you are worried about your liver health.  We also have a helpline for families and young people.  You can contact us on 0800 652 7330.

Do you support people with liver cancer?

Yes. Through Liver Cancer UK, we support people affected by liver cancer, including those who have been diagnosed, people waiting for tests or treatment, and family members or carers. We can help you find trusted information, understand what questions to ask, and feel less alone at each stage.  Find out more by visiting Liver Cancer UK.

I think there might be something wrong with my liver. How would I know if my liver is healthy?

Liver disease does not always cause obvious symptoms, especially in the early stages. If you are worried about your liver health, call our helpline on 0800 652 7330 or speak to your GP.  There is more information about the tests for liver disease here.

Why did you change your name and rebrand as Liver UK?

Following our merger with Children's Liver Disease Foundation, we created Liver UK to bring everything together under one clear, inclusive identity and better reflect our role as the UK's liver health charity. Read more.

Is Liver UK a charity and how are you funded?

Liver UK is a registered charity dedicated to improving liver health and supporting everyone affected by liver disease and liver cancer. We are funded through voluntary donations, fundraising, grants and partnerships. We receive no government funding, so every contribution helps us support people affected by liver disease and liver cancer.  Donate here.

What are the signs and symptoms of liver disease?

Can liver disease be prevented?

Around 90% of liver disease in adults is considered preventable, with major risk factors including alcohol harm, type 2 diabetes, obesity and viral hepatitis. Some liver diseases are caused by genetic or autoimmune conditions.  You can find out more about the risk factors here.
