Political campaigning

Many of the changes needed to improve liver health can only happen through government action. That’s why we work with politicians and decision-makers across the UK to ensure liver disease and liver cancer remain a priority. By sharing evidence, patient experiences and clinical expertise, we advocate for policies that improve prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and care.

Through parliamentary groups, events, debates and consultation responses, we help ensure that the voices of people affected by liver disease are heard by those who shape health policy. We also use our Love Your Liver campaign to engage politicians directly, helping them better understand the importance of early diagnosis and liver disease prevention. Our Time to Act on Liver Health report sets out our key recommendations to Government and the NHS to improve outcomes for patients and their families.

UK Parliament

We work with MPs and members of the House of Lords to raise awareness of liver disease and liver cancer and to advocate for improvements in prevention, diagnosis and care. We provide the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Liver Disease and Liver Cancer, which enables us to run a wide range of activities designed to raise awareness of liver disease and influence policy.

These include parliamentary debates, awareness events, evidence sessions, meetings with ministers and parliamentarians, patient engagement activities, and our annual Love Your Liver parliamentary event, where MPs and Peers can learn about liver health, and the effectiveness of liver scans, firsthand.

Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament)

We work with Members of the Senedd to improve liver health outcomes across Wales. We provide the secretariat for the Cross-Party Group on Liver Disease and Liver Cancer, helping to build political support for improvements in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Through our Love Your Liver campaign, we engage directly with MSs and Senedd stakeholders, including taking our roadshow and liver awareness activities to Wales to promote the importance of early detection and liver health awareness. We have also launched our Sound the Alarm in Wales campaign, which sets out key actions needed to improve liver health services and outcomes across Wales.

Scottish Parliament

We work with MSPs and stakeholders across Scotland to raise awareness of liver disease and promote policies that improve prevention, early diagnosis and access to treatment. Scotland has often led the way in tackling alcohol harm, and we continue to engage with decision-makers to build on this progress and improve outcomes for people affected by liver disease.

As part of this work, we hold events and awareness activities at Holyrood and use our Love Your Liver campaign to engage directly with MSPs. By bringing liver health information and, where possible, liver scanning opportunities to parliamentary settings, we help policymakers understand the scale of liver disease and the importance of early diagnosis.

Northern Ireland Assembly

We work with MLAs and other stakeholders in Northern Ireland to increase awareness of liver disease and advocate for better prevention, diagnosis and care. Through consultation responses, policy engagement and relationship-building with decision-makers, we seek to ensure that the needs of people affected by liver disease are reflected in health policy and service planning.

We also use our Love Your Liver campaign and outreach activities to engage political stakeholders, helping to raise awareness of liver disease risk factors, the value of early diagnosis and the changes needed to improve patient outcomes across Northern Ireland.
