New Love Your Liver unit launched to reach and support more people at risk of liver disease

March 3, 2023

We are delighted to announce the launch of our new, larger Love Your Liver mobile unit, which will allow us to reach more people across the UK and engage with more stakeholders.

Pamela Healy OBE, chief executive at the British Liver Trust, says: “Last year, the Love Your Liver roadshow found that 1 in 10 people scanned were showing the early signs of liver disease.  Caught at this early stage, lifestyle changes may result in the liver repairing itself.”

Our new Love Your Liver unit features two comfortable, full-size scanning rooms, as well as a third room that can be used for additional services.

Pamela continues, “The new unit is larger than our previous unit, enabling us to screen and scan more people as well as offer additional services including confidential liver health advice and viral hepatitis testing at some locations.”

The unit was opened today in St George’s Square in Luton, marked by speeches from our new chair of trustees Alastair King, our chief executive Pamela Healy and Jonathan Worsfold, our project delivery manager.

Improving liver health for all

Our Love Your Liver roadshow is a vital part of our work to raise awareness of liver disease and improve liver health for all.  We take our unit across the UK, stopping in high streets, city squares and shopping centres to find those at risk and offer people an opportunity to check on their liver health.

At the roadshow, people can take a liver health screener to see if they might be at increased risk of liver disease. They can also have a free, liver scan, which is a quick, simple, and non-invasive test, carried out by our specialist nurses.

The roadshow not only helps us explain the importance of liver health to members of the public, but also to politicians and healthcare decision-makers who can better understand what an impact the roadshow has on improving the nation’s liver health and the importance of early detection.

Funded by donations from the Big Give challenge

The funds raised during the Big Give Christmas Challenge supported the costs of the new unit, which, following the launch today, will be out on the road from March, beginning with our roadshow in Wales.

Jonathan Worsfold, British Liver Trust project delivery manager who manages the Love Your Liver roadshow, says: “We do a huge amount of work taking our roadshow around the country, giving people the chance to find out about their risk factors and having a free scan to check for any damage to the liver.

“I want to say a huge thank you, on behalf of the whole team, to everyone who supported us with your donations, enabling us to buy this new unit.”
