CLDF’s Yellow Alert campaign to alert health professionals and new parents to the signs of liver disease in babies is a vital area of our work. We have now added to the wealth of materials available by introducing a podcast. Our Information and Awareness Officer, Joanne, explains why.
“Although we have already created a variety of different Yellow Alert materials, I felt that there was a need for something different – I think it is important to provide information in a wide variety of formats to suit different people. We already use podcasts at CLDF, and I felt that the format would also work well for Yellow Alert.
Our other resources are necessarily quite clinical, but the podcast allows us to provide some personal experience from one of our families, plus advice and insight from Michelle. This can be a lot more powerful. It also allows us to create more awareness without the cost of printed materials.”
As well as being available free for all parents, the podcast, together with our other Yellow Alert resources, has now been sent to 31 health visiting courses and 68 midwifery courses throughout the UK. Many universities have online learning portals and the link to the podcast can be added to this so that students can listen at any time.
“Although the materials have only just been sent out, we’ve had 122 listeners so far, which is a great start and we’ve had some really positive feedback,” continues Joanne. “Quite a few course leaders have told me that the podcast format suits them well because they are always looking to provide students with lived experience to aid their learning.
“I’m so grateful to Gemma for sharing her story on the podcast in such an open an honest way. It’s great to know that her experience will help inform the learning for the next generation of midwives and health visitors who are on the front line when it comes to detecting liver disease in babies.”
