About me
My name is Belinda and I was diagnosed with advanced liver fibrosis/MASLD in June 2024. My diagnosis came as a shock, particularly because my mother died from liver cancer in 1989, aged just 46. My early experiences with secondary care were challenging, and I quickly realised that I wanted to help improve the experience for others facing a liver diagnosis in my area. I discovered the British Liver Trust (now Liver UK) through an online search and began reading and learning. This was the beginning of a journey of enlightenment that continues to this day. Through Liver UK I have found knowledge, support, understanding and a sense of purpose, and I hope to use my own experience to help others feel less alone, better informed and more supported. Why Liver UK matters
Liver UK matters to me because it’s been an important part of my journey. At a time when I felt shocked, overwhelmed and unsure about what the future might hold. Finding Liver UK gave me access to information, education and a community that helped me understand my liver condition and feel less alone. It has also given me a sense of purpose. My own experiences, including the challenges I faced, have made me passionate about improving the experience of others. I want people to feel heard, informed and supported from the moment they receive a diagnosis. Liver UK matters because it has helped me turn a difficult and frightening experience into an opportune to learn, advocate and make a difference – it has quite literally been life-saving for me.
