The LIVERAGE and LIVERAGE Cirrhosis studies are large clinical research studies for adults living with MASLD, a type of fatty liver disease. These studies focus on people with MASH, a more advanced form of MASLD. The studies include people at different stages of the condition, including liver scarring and cirrhosis.
MASLD happens when fat builds up in the liver because the body stops handling energy (especially sugar and fat) properly. It is sometimes called NAFLD or fatty liver disease. In some people, MASLD can develop into a more serious form called MASH. MASH can lead to liver damage over time.
Eating well, managing weight, and staying active are important for managing MASLD and MASH. But there are currently very few medicines that directly treat the liver damage these conditions can cause.
The LIVERAGE studies are part of ongoing research. They aim to find out whether a new medicine could help improve long‑term liver health.
What are the studies looking at?
The studies are testing a medicine called Survodutide. It is given as a small injection once a week. The aim is to find out whether it can:
- reduce fat in the liver
- slow down or reduce liver scarring
- improve liver health over time
This medicine has already been tested in people. This includes those living with obesity, diabetes, MASLD and MASH. These early studies helped researchers see how the medicine works and how to use it safely.
The LIVERAGE studies are among the first large studies to look closely at the medicine’s effects. Focusing on liver disease, including more advanced stages.
The medicine is still being researched and is not available on prescription.
Two related studies
There are two separate but connected studies:
- LIVERAGE, for people who have MASH with no cirrhosis
- LIVERAGE Cirrhosis, for people who have MASH with cirrhosis
Both studies are running at hospitals and research centres in the UK and around the world.
Who may be able to take part?
The studies are for adults aged 18 or over who have been diagnosed with MASH. Each study has its own criteria. Not everyone who is interested will be suitable.
Before joining, people attend screening visits. These are an opportunity to talk to the study team. And to have checks to find out if the study is a good and safe fit for you.
Taking part is completely voluntary.
