April 19, 2025

World Liver Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the liver, the largest internal organ in the body, which performs 500 different functions, including breaking down food and converting it into energy, storing essential vitamins and iron and combating infections.

This year’s theme is Food is Medicine, highlighting how what we eat and drink can directly impact liver health and function That’s why we’re shining a spotlight on the importance of a balanced diet

When someone is overweight, fat can build up in their liver. This causes metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), which is closely linked to being overweight as well as conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.

Experts agree that a well-balanced diet is the best approach to lose weight, avoid gaining weight, and reduce the risk of many serious conditions including MASLD. Read more in a blog by dietitian Bally Parekh, written specially for World Liver Day.

Pamela Healy, British “With one in three of us are at risk of liver disease World Liver Day offers a great opportunity to think about how our liver health can be affected by what we eat and drink. A healthy balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports your liver and helps to prevent liver disease.”
