A new chapter for liver health: together, we are
Liver UK
Introducing Liver UK
Every day, children, young people and adults across the UK are living with liver disease, navigating diagnosis, treatment and uncertainty, often alongside the families and carers supporting them.
For many, it can feel overwhelming, isolating and misunderstood. Too often, getting the right support or care is harder than it should be.
This is why the British Liver Trust and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation came together as one unified charity in 2024, bringing together our expertise, support and campaigning to stand alongside and represent everyone, of all ages, affected by liver disease and liver cancer across all four nations of the UK.
Today, we take the next step in that journey as Liver UK: a stronger, clearer and more united voice for liver health.
Not because our mission has changed, but because the need for our work has never been greater. Read our FAQs to find out more.
Why we’ve become Liver UK
For over 30 years, the British Liver Trust and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation have supported people and families affected by liver disease, providing trusted information, practical advice, emotional support and campaigning for improvements in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.
That commitment has not changed. What has changed is the scale of the challenge and our opportunity to make an even greater difference.
By coming together as Liver UK, we can:
- Reach more people and improve the patient experience for those who need support and information
- Become a bigger voice so we can make liver health a national priority
- Challenge stigma and misconceptions
- Improve access to diagnosis, treatment and care
- Support people more seamlessly at every stage of life
- Grow our community of supporters, fundraisers and volunteers
Liver UK gives us the platform to go further and create greater change.
Here for everyone, at every stage
We are here to unite the liver community, so that everyone affected by liver disease and liver cancer gets the care, support and understanding they need.
Every day, we help people overcome the challenges that come with liver disease by:
- Standing by your side when it all feels too much, with specialist nurses, family support teams and a community of people who understand what you are going through
- Guiding you with expert information and advice, helping you understand your condition and access the support you need
- Partnering with healthcare professionals to improve early detection, treatment and support
- Putting liver health on the map, driving change nationally and locally to improve care for everyone affected
Built by our community
Liver UK has been shaped by the people at the heart of our community.
Over the past year, we have worked closely with patients, families, supporters, healthcare professionals and partners. This has included:
- Surveys to gather feedback on our messaging and design concepts
- Regular consultation with our patient advisory groups
- Conversations with adults living with liver disease, young people and parents of children with liver conditions
- Meetings with our Clinical Advisory Group
- Feedback from staff, volunteers and supporters
- Research with the general public and with those who have liver disease but have not engaged with us
This has helped us create a brand that reflects both the people we are here to support, and the future we want to build together.
Why liver disease needs urgent action
Liver disease is one of the UK’s biggest health challenges, yet it remains one of the most overlooked and misunderstood health conditions.
It can affect anyone, at any age.
From babies born with rare and complex liver conditions, to children and young people living with lifelong liver disease, to adults facing conditions linked to obesity, diabetes, viral hepatitis, genetics or alcohol.
Some liver disease can be prevented. OthersSome cannot. But everyone affected deserves the right support, treatment and care.
The challenge is growing:
- Too many people are still diagnosed too late
- Access to treatment and care still varies depending on where people live
- One in three adults in the UK are at risk of liver disease
- Liver disease is one of the leading causes of death in people under 64
Too many people still do not know the risks. Too many face stigma and misconceptions. Too many struggle to get the care they need.
And for too many children and families living with liver disease, there is still too little awareness and understanding of the challenges they face. That has to change.
Our strategy for change
Earlier this year, we launched our new strategy. Our vision for 2026 to 2032 is based on building momentum to change lives for the better. It focuses on 4 key pillars to achieve this:
- Supporting everyone affected by liver disease and liver cancer
- Ensuring patients have access to the best care and treatment
- Awareness, early detection and behavioural support for everyone at risk
- Working with healthcare professionals to improve outcomes
Liver UK gives us a stronger platform to deliver that strategy. A clearer identity. A stronger voice. A bigger opportunity to create lasting change.
Thank you
This new chapter belongs to everyone who has supported British Liver Trust and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation over the years.
Every donation, every fundraiser, every story shared, every campaign and every conversation has helped bring us here.
Liver UK builds on that legacy.
And together, we can go even further.

FAQs
We know you may have questions about our new name. We’ve brought together the answers to the questions we’re asked most often to help explain what Liver UK means for you and the future of our work.
What is Liver UK?
Liver UK is the leading charity for everyone, of any age, with every kind of liver disease. It is the new name for the British Liver Trust and the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation.
The charities merged in April 2024, to amplify our voice and strengthen our impact so that we can support more children, adults and families around the UK affected by liver disease.
Together we’re working towards a world where everyone has a healthy liver, through new cures, better care, and a focus on prevention.
Our mission is to transform liver health for everyone through support, early detection, better treatment, and championing research.
Why have you changed your name?
The liver health crisis is growing, and we need a stronger, clearer voice to respond to it. Since our merger, we have continued to use the names Children’s Liver Disease Foundation and British Liver Trust. However, this has caused confusion and has not fully reflected that we are now one organisation, rather than two separate charities.
By uniting under a single name, we can present one strong, consistent voice. This will strengthen our services, improve how we support people, and make our campaigning for better prevention, diagnosis and treatment more impactful.
As Liver UK, we will amplify our voice—making it stronger, more influential and more effective.
Operating as one charity will also reduce duplication, for example in our representation on government boards and committees, while allowing us to streamline administrative, compliance and regulatory processes. By combining expertise and benefiting from economies of scale through shared services and a single administration team, we can make better use of our resources and direct more of our efforts towards supporting people affected by liver disease.
Finally, it will make it simpler for healthcare professionals and others to signpost to us, ensuring more people can easily access the support they need.
Who is Liver UK for?
We are here for everyone of any age who is affected by liver disease.
- If you’re a patient living with liver disease, and in need of support, expert information or a listening ear from one of our specialist nurses or our children’s and family support service, we’re here, making sure that you won’t face it alone.
- If you’re caring for, or worried about someone with liver disease, whether it’s a child, family member or a friend, we provide straightforward information to help you understand their diagnosis and to suggest helpful ways that can help you to support someone else.
- If you’re concerned about your own liver health, our Love Your Liver roadshows travel the length and breadth of the UK, raising awareness and offering free liver scans and checks, and providing a range of information to help you make positive changes that can help to keep your liver healthy.
- If you’re a Healthcare professional, whether a GP, a practice nurse, a midwife, health visitor or you’re working specifically in the field of liver disease, we have resources to help you support your patients.
We’re here for anyone affected by liver disease, of any age, across the four nations.
Our website offers a variety of accessible information to help inform and support anyone who needs us.
What are the advantages of becoming one charity, rather than two?
We will speak with one unified voice, which will help us to better represent the hundreds of thousands of people with liver disease across all four nations.
As one distinct charity it will be easier for all patients, family members, carers and Healthcare Professionals to find and access information, services and support in one central place.
As a single charity representing people of all ages with liver disease, we can work better to effectively combat the misconception that liver disease is caused solely by alcohol.
A stronger single patient voice will give our campaigns more weight and enable us to better advocate for effective policy change on behalf of everyone with and at risk of liver disease.
Working as one charity will enhance the necessary seamless care throughout the transition from paediatric to adult support and treatment, improving the quality of care and ultimately save lives.
Will there be any changes to the support that you offer?
The only big changes will be to how we look – with our new name comes a new logo and a new look, to reflect our new unified organisation.
We’ll still offer our helpline and although our website will have a fresh new look, it will still carry all of the expert-informed information, valuable resources and caring support that has formed the basis of so much of our collective work.
We will ensure that the personal stories and real-life experiences continue to inspire and reassure others with liver disease, and to remind them that they aren’t alone.
We hope that the only changes you’ll notice are positive and we’d love to hear what you think.
What will happen to my data?
We believe it’s important to be upfront about what we do with your data, and we are committed to treating it with respect and keeping it safe.
If you provided your information to either the British Liver Trust or the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, some of the methods we’ve previously used to collect and look after your personal data may change. Please be reassured that we will continue to keep your personal data safe and we will only process it for the purposes you gave it to us.
If you have any concerns about the information that Liver UK holds, or you’d like to know more, please email [email protected]
I’m a regular donor to the British Liver Trust/Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. What will happen to my donation now?
Donations will not be affected. Liver UK is here for anyone affected by or living with liver disease. Please speak to the fundraising team it you have any questions on donations.
Do I need to do anything?
No. If you already support us, fundraise, volunteer or use our services, you do not need to do anything. We are still here for you, just under one new name.
