Patient stories
Marian has primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Thank you for sharing your story, Marian.
The plan is now to be taken care of by the liver nursing team and some lifestyle changes.
I was suffering from fatigue, terrible joint pain and depression after the death of my husband in November 2020. My doctor had done a blood test that showed I was severely deficient in vitamin D and my liver function tests were abnormal.
I had further blood tests, an appointment with a rheumatologist and a liver specialist. The rheumatologist was of the opinion that my joint pain was caused by whatever was happening with my liver. I had some scans, after which the liver specialist confirmed primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The rheumatologist confirmed some osteoarthritis and was sure the PBC was the cause of the joint pain.
I’m currently taking Ursodeoxycholic acid for the PCB. Moving forward the plan is now to be taken care of by the liver nursing team and some lifestyle changes including giving up alcohol and refined carbohydrates.
I’ll have another liver scan in a couple of years to check for any progression in the PBC. In the meantime, I have retired and look forward to helping with my new grandson and getting out and about in my motorhome.
