Family, friends and carers

Support for you

As well as caring for your loved one it is important to care for yourself. But we know from speaking to carers that this often gets lost in all the other demands.

This page has information on finding support, how Liver UK can help, and links to other organisations who offer support.

The information on this page is for:

  • Family, friends, and carers of an adult with liver disease

You can find information about caring for a child with liver disease here.

Finding your support network

Finding someone to talk to can sometimes be difficult. There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings about liver conditions. You might not feel comfortable talking openly about what is going on.

In this case it might help to pick just one or two people who you trust to listen and to keep your information to themselves.

You can find out more advice to help with telling other people here.

Talking to others in a similar situation can also be a big help. We have an online community that is open to anyone with a liver condition and to their family, friends, and carers. We also offer support groups. Including a group for carers.

Our nurse-led helpline

Our free helpline is run by specialist liver nurses. They talk to lots of carers and family members. They can help you with things like understanding test results, coping with symptoms and how to get the most out of medical appointments.

You can call them free on 0800 652 7330

from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday (except bank holidays).

You can also email them at [email protected]
